He did it. by kradeelav He did it. by kradeelav
It's scenes like these that makes you really appreciate all the thought and character that Karen put into these books. And that make me -morbidly enough - proud to count myself as a mando'ade.

------

Phew! THAT was an adventure of a picture. @w@; I learned so much about perspective and getting the whole mood of the pic together it wasn't even funny. Definitely going to try to do more of these, and even better? I can finish them in less than a day! :w00t:

(This picture is starting to make me have a crush on Skirata. WRYYY. Oh well, you're just that awesome and badass, I'm sure it can't hurt. ;D )

Enjoy~!

Vau really scarred me in this scene. Especially right in front of bardin. Great job on this.

It is eerie how he can switch from vaguely pleasantly snarky to the most chilling violence, isn't it?  Thankfully this time didn't amount to anything, but I'm sure his words kept Jusik up for more than a few nights - probably had no idea just how much of a grudge some mando'ade had against the jedi.

(aw man now you're making me want to reread the books!  Thanks for the comment!  )

It probably would've also made Jusik hesitant in trusting vau after that. (My bad. Still have to read imperial commando.)

for sure!

(Not gonna lie, you aren't missing too much with ImpComm - it feels kinda like an unfinished story written by someone else?  I mean, it's decent enough, and it shows you what areas the characters were going to get involved in next, but it's not quite like the core series in terms of cohesiveness. )

you know...I just got the last books (after Hard Contact) and while I curse Karen Traviss....I bless her. she can not only make me interested in characters, she can make me put my emotions into them, invest myself in them. When they're hurt, I cry...when they're happy, I am overjoyed...such a wonderful author.

Wow this looks great! The mood is incredible. I haven't read the books yet, as I've been so busy doing college stuff, but I was wondering what order should I read all the books in? I was going to start with the Prequel and Original Trilogies first of all, but there are so many Star Wars books out there, some bad and some good, that I really don't know where to go after that. :)

Well, if you're meaning -all- the SW expanded universe books, that's quite a lot! There's almost too many to read unless if you're a hard core fanatic, and I'll freely admit I've only probably read 2/5 of them. :>

If I were you, I'd pick a faction that you like best - Jedi, Sith, or Mandalorian - and start reading up on books that center around them. Timeline/order really doesn't matter, as all the books hold together as individual stories very well.

Personally, since I'm a die-hard Mando'ade fan, I'd encourage you to read this series (Republic Commando.) It shows a really unique side of the war through the clone's eyes, and has some incredibly powerful philosophical threads to boot. I will warn you that it's not very positive towards Jedi, though.

Thanks for the question, and feel free to ask for more book recommendations. ;D

Yes, I've heard those Republic Commando books are very good! There are just so many Star Wars books out there, it's a bit overwhelming, but of course I have a lifetime to read them. I will definitely try the Republic Commando books, and I don't mind at all that they look at the Jedi negatively. I like to get different perspectives from all the characters/factions; that's what makes Star Wars so fascinating to me. :D

Thank you for your help! It's greatly appreciated! :w00t:

;D Glad to hear about that!

Two more quick book-recs: Shadows of the Empire is an oldie, but a goodie, if you want the scoop in between Ep V and VI (and pretty much all the fandom likes that one, to boot.) The Cestus Deception was another one I have a soft spot for, especially for partly hearing a clone's perspective, and for having an epic Asajj Ventress vs Obi Wan duel.

I better stop now. xD No problem~!

Unfortuantly, no. ImpCom 501st was the last one to come out, due to a falling out between Karen and the SW execs. :< Apparently they didn't like her take on the Mandalorians.

I thought so too, but I think it was a combination of (a) dissing the Jedi, who are a lot of fanboy's favorites, and (b) well, have you seen the new clone wars animation's take on Mandalorians? It's terrible. D: But apparently that's what Lucas wanted, so...

At least we have five good books to enjoy. ;D

Well yeah, but the Jedi were/are just as bad as anyone else really. They just tend ot be better about it if that makes any sense at all. Her take on it made them more personable.

I haven't really seen much of hte Clone Wars honestly, how do they portray the Mandalorians in that?

Never been a fan of 'the good guys', and just reading the books confirmed a lot of their hypocritical-ness. (Not that Skirata was a shining example of honesty, but still. )

I haven't seen anything either, but from what plot-bits I do know, apparently they made the Mandalorians pacifists, if you can believe that. Um, last time I heard, they had always been a warrior/mercenary race, whether for good or for bad. Not to mention they stuck in a 'queen' when Mando'ade have never cared about royalty, and they've totally changed the planet environment as well.

While they've done an okay job on the clone characterization, it just irks me so bad that they'd make the Mandalorians so out of character. >.<

Skirata is perhaps one of the most amusing Star Wars characters ever in my opinion.

Wait what? Pacifists? My ass! They've been going to war since before the Sith War with Exar Kun for goodness sakes! I mean it was a well established fact that the Mandalorians were coming to town every few decades and you'd better batten down the hatches because dey were takin' and rapin' everything out dere....and a queen? What the hell happened to the Mandalore? I mean yes, I believe there's been at least ONE canonized female Mandalore but I don't believe she was referred to as a queen...but then again, originally Boba Fett was supposed to be the last of the Mandalorians so I guess they're used to changing shit by now right?

Again, I haven't seen much of the show, but fromw hat I've watched the clones seem pretty true to form.

Amusing in which way? xD I'm a Vau fangirl at heart, but they're both just so kickass and loveable in that mando way. xD

Yeah, I know, right? That's like changing the Sith ideals to be exactly like the Jedi's - it's just so far counter to who they are. D:

I know!

Although Kar'buir repeatedly said she couldn't do anything about Sev'ika, which sucked. I wanna know what the heck happened to him! And the rest!

Although I wasn't too terribly crazy with where things were headed after Order 66. ImpCom seemed really out of character for Dar and a number of other characters. I sense that probably partway through Order 66, Karen was being forced to go along with changes for TCW and maybe started to at first(or the editors did), then couldn't, so she left, rather than ruin her characters.

Better an unfinished story than a crappy one.

Yes, Vau's a hardass, but he loves his boys as much as Kal'ika does, in his own way, and will probably never admit it, 'cause that's how he is. :XD:

Agree'd so much with ImpCom - it was good, but it just didn't have the 'oomph' feeling that the last four books did. Plus it was just so weird to have everyone sneak around the Empire when they could come and go as they pleased in the Republic.

:D Probably the only people that know are his Delta boys, haha.

Yeah. It felt like Karen more than Order 66 did(there were some glaring errors and parts that just made me think somebody ELSE was doing the writing), but it just was out of character, especially Dar.

lol, yeah, only the Deltas would know. Anybody else that would find out, lol, 6 feet under. :XD:

Can I ask what you think the glaring errors are? I'm highly tempted to write a long fic 'sequel' to ImpCom -since I do some fanfic on the side - and I'm very eager to avoid falling into the same traps. xD

Off the top of my head, Dar's behavior. He just turned so dark and not-Dar that it bugged the hell out of me.

It's one thing to still be mourning Etain, but to the point he was headed that it seemed like he'd even take out Kal'buir if he got in his way, and that just wasn't Dar.

I've only been able to read ImpCom once, and Dar's behavior bothered me too much.

Order 66 was the one with errors that made it seem like Karen wasn't writing it half the time.

The points I can recall off the top of my head(as the book's still packed until we get our little library organized) were...

1. Shysa appeared, but where the hell was Dala? Dala was well known to be Shysa's best bud from boyhood, but we don't see him or even have him mentioned. That's not something Karen would miss.

2. Spar. They totally effed him up. Previously, he was persuaded(by Shysa) to be Mand'alor after being so long w/o one that came with Jango's death. This was going with Shysa's whole idea that they needed some sort of Fett-heir to rally the Mandos.

But in Order 66, it's like not only was Spar never Mand'alor, but he didn't even WANT the job. Also something that I don't think Karen would have missed.

There's probably some more minor points that I've missed, but I'd have to dig around to find where I've got all my RC books at and reread it. Those were the major ones that really nagged at me, even now years later.

There's also Etain's death, actually. The way she died was a bit off to me. I'm betting Karen had a much better death, but the editors did some work that didn't seem right.

Et'ika obviously was no Obi-wan, but even in defending a clone in the heat of the moment, she would have found SOME way to avoid getting cleaved from shoulder to hip by some panicky Padawan with a saber. And NOT reveal herself to be Force-sensitive, recently ex-Jedi in the process.

There was just something about the way she threw herself in the path between the clone and the busted padawans that she should have been able to escape alive. Maybe scarred, but certainly not dead.

If I reread it sometime and remember, I can maybe find some smaller details there were glaring, but less irritating than these three. And frankly, lol, it's pretty easy for a good fic writer to avoid these.

I figure, these were the points where canon was starting to get skewed for TCW and Karen was trying hard to avoid it, but sort of got overruled and rather than disappoint her fans, left.

Personally, I tend to leave Etain alive in fics, as well as correct the errors with Spar and Dala, which isn't hard if you're a die-hard Mando fan. :P
